Mayor lifts parking rules for festive event

Bristol’s mayor joined traders and shoppers on Gloucester Road for a spot of Christmas shopping and a mince pie - and suspended parking restrictions for the evening.

Shop owners made the special request for their late-night shopping event on December 13.

In response, Mayor George Ferguson asked officers to suspend parking restrictions on the bus lanes and clearways for the evening peak on that day.

Mr Ferguson said: “I have long been a champion of Bristol’s independent shops and enterprises and the Gloucester Road is renowned as one of the best independent streets in the UK. It’s a great place to shop both at Christmas and the whole year round.

“This is just the kind of initiative I want to see more of to help make our high streets more resilient to the challenges of retail sheds and internet shopping.”
