A barber shop in Redland has celebrated its 30th anniversary.
A family party marked the day Patrizio Smith opened his doors to customers at Patrizio Gentlemen’s Barber Shop on Lower Redland Road in 1991. These days, he is joined by sons Sergio and Marco.
Back then, Patrizio had been sharpening his skills as a barber in Knowle, and had recently married his girlfriend Maria when the opportunity arose to buy his own premises near the area he’d lived in as a child.
Patrizio said: “I knew the area well as I grew up living in West Shrubbery and used to play on Lower Redland Road. I wanted the property but buying the shop back then was a risk as the country was just coming out of recession and interest rates were high at the time.”
He styled the interior with a classic 1930s theme, and has added decorations which reflect his mum’s Sicilian heritage. Patrizio worked on his own for a couple of years and then took on someone to help when his eldest son was born in 1993, followed by another son and a daughter.
Businesses come and go but Patrizio’s barber shop has remained, as he explained: “Things change and I’ve got older! My barber shop and Wild Oats are the only businesses left on this stretch of Lower Redland Road from when I opened.
“Styles have changed a lot too. It used to be all traditional flat tops but now we do skin fades and beard shaping.”
Like many businesses, they closed for seven months during the lockdown but reopened to queues. Patrizio said: “Customers have been loyal and we’re all still here. It does make you think how things can just change overnight. We ended up working for seven days straight to do all the catch up.
“I like working with my sons. It means that we have more of a time together and there’s someone who can all step in if one of us needs time off. Money can’t buy that feeling of everyone being together. I’d like to thank all my customers and family that we’ve all come through the lockdown. Roll on for another 30 years!”
