The dream to build a new Scout hut is being realised, as the group fundraising for the state of the art venue edges closer to its fundraising target.

In a bid to raise some last minute funds, the group behind the 'Hut 6388' project held a spring fair, which raised £3,700.

However, there is still about £40k needed to make the dream become a reality.

The new hut, costing around £370k, will meet the needs of Scouting, Guiding and the local community in nearby Ashley Down and St Andrews.

The dream to replace the existing 60-year-old hut, which has become dilapidated and suffers from a leaky roof, damp ingress, structural decay and an antiquated heating system, began in 2011.

Planning was approved for the building, located in St Bartholomews Road, in May the following year.

Contracts are now about to be signed, a new long term lease is being drafted and work will hopefully start before the end of June.

Group members say that they have been offered interest free loans to meet their fundraising target, but hope to do all they can to raise the money themselves.

Mike Evans, who is in charge of the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, says that he has been heartened by the support he has received so far, and was pleased with the turnout at their recent spring fair: “The afternoon saw fine weather and by mid afternoon there was a good crowd of people of all ages having a wonderful time.

“There was good food, and drinks of all sorts available. There was a lovely community family atmosphere with lots of activity and a buzz of conversation.

“We are grateful to so many people and groups that have helped us to get to this point. There is still much to do. However we can now see the end of the journey.

“We are still fund raising for the last £40,000 and hope to have the project fully funded before the build is finished in late October.”
