A REDLAND woman is starting 2015 on a high after winning £5k from St Peter's Hospice's annual prize draw.

Lydia Whitaker, 31, had never heard of the charity’s Local Lotto scheme, but decided to purchase a £1 ticket for its 'Superdraw' raffle on a whim.

She said: “I was walking down Whiteladies Road, through the farmer’s market a couple of Saturdays before Christmas and came across a nice man selling tickets.

"He didn’t look like he was getting many takers at that point so I thought I’d buy one.

"[One day] I answered a phone call from a random number whilst sat at my desk in the office. They said it was St Peter’s Hospice.

"When they broke the news I was totally stunned. I was so shocked in fact, I could barely speak."

Lydia, who now plans to play regularly, has already used some of the money to treat her family and plans to spend the rest of her winnings on a trip to New Zealand, where some friends live.

“The hospice has helped my dreams come true. I’d like to say a big thank you to St Peter’s Hospice and I’m planning to run the Bristol Half Marathon in September on the charity’s behalf as a way of giving something back.”

The Local Lotto is drawn once a week with participants able to win up to £1,000 every time.

The annual Superdraw is held every December with a top prize of £5,000.

Last year's Christmas raffle raised £40,000 for the charity.

Edd Smith, fundraiser at St Peter’s Hospice said: “The Superdraw is always such an exciting way to raise money for the hospice.

“The money raised will go towards caring for those in Bristol with life-limiting illnesses as well as supporting their family members through a very difficult time.

"Without the support of Bristol we wouldn’t be able to do it, so we thank everyone who took part this year. A huge congratulations to Lydia.”
