Bishopston Fish Bar has been selected for The Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award. The chippy, based in Gloucester Road central, is the area winner for Avon, Wiltshire and Dorset for the fourth time running and is now in the finals hoping to win the award for the whole of the Westcountry region, right down to Cornwall.

Owner, Nick Lomvardos keeps on winning awards - his walls are decorated with them. This year alone he has won the Fry Magazine Top 50 in the UK and the Top 60 Independent Takeaway as well as the latest award.

Nick says that his secret is simply: “Fresh oil, best fish, proper chips made with fresh spuds and fresh batter every single day. I make sure that the shop is clean and that we speak to the customers and treat them right. “I don’t want people to think just because we’ve won awards so many times that we will rest on our laurels. What I want is to win the region and that is really hard.”

Nick started out in the business aged 18, working for his dad at his shop in Filton Avenue, before opening his own premises nearly 6 years ago.

He added: “It makes me very proud and everytime I win an award I dedicate it to my dad. He’s not very well at the moment but he taught me everything I know.”
