Autumn calls for chunky knitwear!

It’s official, autumn is here. No longer can we pretend that we’re in the throws of an Indian summer and think we’ll be warm enough to get away without wearing a jacket, or at least a cardigan.

It’s official, autumn is here. No longer can we pretend that we’re in the throws of an Indian summer and think we’ll be warm enough to get away without wearing a jacket, or at least a cardigan. I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been craving cosy knitwear in the same way that on a cold day all I can think about is bowl of warm soup and a hunk of bread!

Heavy jumpers, thick roll necks and items with sleeves, long enough to be pulled over your hands, have now started to occupy my mind on a daily basis, whilst t-shirts and midi skirts without tights (can you imagine!) have become a thing of the past. Luckily this season, chunky knitwear is the trend du jour so there are plenty of choices around.

A lot of my clients complain that in the winter they find it difficult to be warm and look good too but thanks to the variety now available, jumpers don’t need to be purely functional - they can look gorgeous as well. This autumn/winter they come in every shape, size and length. From heavily textured, patterned or fluffy cropped knits to mid-length cable-knit ponchos, lighter weight jumper dresses to full length patterned coatigans - that’s a cross between a cardigan and a coat, to you and me! Now there is no excuse to be cold and suffering in the name of fashion or warm yet frumpy - for the next few months you can relax, be warm AND stylish too - hurrah!

Here a few ideas of how you can wear your knitwear over the coming months:

  • Try wearing a fluffy 3/4 length cardigan over a blouse and a pair of leather look jeans with some great ankle boots.
  • For extra warmth, layer a crew neck jumper over a buttoned up shirt and add a sparkly statement necklace in too. This is a look that can be worn for smarter occasions with a pair of tailored ankle grazers or a pencil skirt. If you want to go more casual pair with some with ripped boyfriend jeans and trainers.
  • To make your look more interesting play around with textures, combine a wool cardigan with a leather midi skirt or an embellished cotton jumper with a patterned wool A-line mini-skirt.
  • Layer a lightweight polo neck under a denim shirt, blazer or even a boxy crop top and wear with a pair of patterned shorts or skirt, thick tights and boots.
