The product has been created by enterprising teenagers from Fairfield High School.

The Somali Shidni sauce comes in four flavours - original (tamarind), carrot, coconut and dates – and can add zest to everything from burgers, hot dogs, chips, rice, pizza and salad.

A team of Year 10 students taking part in the annual national Young Enterprise contest came up with the chutney, choosing the name Amaliso as an anagram of Somalia.

The students finalised the recipe after carrying out taste tests. Their aim was to develop a product that reflects the multicultural nature of their team – members come from Sweden, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Kenya, Holland, Ethiopia, Norway and Somalia - and their school.

The school cook is manufacturing the sauce at present, although the youngsters hope to find a commercial producer.

The team members are Arafa Moaw, Hiwaaq Dahir, Abdinajib Ahmed, Vanessa James, Maria Ahmed, Samia Osman, Tyreke Angus, Fatima El Elmi and Kawsar Omar.

As reported in last month's Bishopston Voice, the students wowed the judges at the area final in Clevedon, where they performed their promotional song to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas' What a Feeling. They were top out of ten schools in the former Avon area, taking three of the nine titles – best Bristol school, best business adviser – Rotary's Ron Stagg - and company programme winner.

Last month, the team took part in the South West final and came away with two more prizes – the finance award and best link teacher – Charmaine Clarke.

Caroline Tarbuck, from Young Enterprise, said: “ The standard of entries in the competition for 2014 was exceptionally high. Congratulations to all the winners.”
